GSM is one measurement, not a quality grade
GSM means grams per square metre and describes fabric mass over an area. It does not by itself establish durability, opacity, stretch, hand feel, or suitability. Two fabrics with the same weight can behave differently because of fibre, yarn, construction, and finishing. Evaluate the whole material specification alongside the product.
Start with use and construction
Explain whether the product needs airflow, warmth, stretch, structure, drape, abrasion resistance, or a particular surface for decoration. Also consider washing and care. Knitted and woven materials behave differently, and a fabric that works for one product may be unsuitable for another. Use physical swatches and a sample to assess the proposed choice.
Match decoration to material
A chosen print or logo method can affect which fabric is practical. Ask how the proposed method interacts with fibre content, stretch, texture, colour, and heat sensitivity. Review the result on the actual or agreed representative material. Screen colour and marketing fabric names are not enough to establish the final appearance.
Document what is being supplied
Record fibre composition, construction, weight or agreed range, colour reference, stretch requirements, finishing, and any evidence needed for a specific claim. Material availability should be confirmed for the project. Our fabric guides explain decision points; they are not an inventory or a promise that every material is available for every order.
